It boots faster and applications launch much faster. I want to mention that the G5 is quieter than the G4 MDD. If I was buying for the office I would insist on a new DUAL G5. I only bought the single 1.6 GHz G5 because it's for home use with my audio applications.

I will say one more thing in that if you are a professional needing to work at ever faster speeds, than you should always be buying the fatsest MAC available anyways. So yes Dave is correct in that for the moment for people working with video you better buy a DUAL G5 if you want to have more power than a DUAL G4.

The G5's aren't even running at their full potential on JAGUAR. Like I mentioned before and will say again, PANTHER is going to change all the test results anyways. It screams along with all the tasks that I've been throwing at it so far. I in no way meant to imply that people should not buy the new G5's. What I really meant by my summary comment was that in this ONE particular test I would have to say that a DUAL G5 is the only machine that will beat the DUAL G4 MDD in THIS ONE TEST.

You can download Nightflight.sit file for yourself at the following site : A DUAL processor G5 is in need here to beat out the DUAL G4 MDD.Ĭheck out the following link for more results using this project file. The DUAL G4's still have the edge at the moment. Summary : All you graphics people out there who mostly use ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS take care before you consider trading in your DUAL processor G4's for the single processor G5's. In fact the DUAL G4 1.25 MDD is 19% faster at rendering this project file. Winner for this test is the DUAL G4 1.25 GHz. Test : Render 10 frames of Nightflight and see how long each machine took to complete this task. 1.25 GHz DUAL G4 MDD (1.25 GIG's RAM 10.2.3)Īpplication used in test : Adobe After Effects 5.5.1 with Nightflight Project file. OK, more testing just completed on these 2 machines.ġ.6 GHz G5 (1.25 GIG's RAM 10.2.7) vs. I'm going to do an Adobe After effects test tomorrow with the same machines and will post the results. It will help people understand if G5's are right for them or not. If the ehmac community has time and people can put new G5's up against the last generation of G4's post your results here. Here is the Xbench score my G5 received when I ran it 2 days ago :Ĭheck out the Xbench web site and look at the comparison pages to get an idea of what the scores mean relative to other models of powermacs. PANTHER was designed with the G5's architecture in mind whereas JAGUAR was designed more for the G4 architecture. That's why the single 1.6 GHz G5 beat out a DUAL 1.25 GHz MDD for this particular applcation.Īlso, when Apple releases OS X PANTHER in the next month or so the G5's should see a significant boost in overall CPU horsepower. The important piece of the puzzle that people have to know is this : Most audio applications are not designed to utilize dual processors. So if you were depending on the G4 to make you money in this test scenerio, you'd be lining up to buy a new G5 to get the job done. It played back most of the project song fine except in areas where heavy effects where used then the G4 processors would max out and playback suffered and project song would slow down and audio stuttering would occour. I don't want to mislead anyone though so I have to also say that the DUAL 1.25 G4 didn't do that bad. Summary : The single G5 1.6 GHz machine came out on top for this real world test.

Playback on the G4 stuttered and the tempo of song would flutter down & then go back up depending on the load the song was taking at that given moment. G4 DUAL 1.25 maxed out to 50%/50% on processors almost all the time during playback. But it played back song without any stopping or stuttering or slowing down of tempo. G5 1.6 maxed out to 100% processor usage many times during playback. Loaded in the same project file for both machines and waited to see the results. REASON 2.5 loaded in both machines and preferences set the exact same on both computers. DUAL 1.25 GHz MDD with 1.25 GIG's of RAM OS 10.2.3 I did a test so far with PROPELLERHEADS REASON as follows: I just bought (from Dave at MacDoc,Thanks! Dave) my G5 1.6 GHz powermac and I've completed one test on it against a DUAL 1.25 GHz MDD. It's time to put the new G5's to the test.
